Just an update. I received the watch an it looks GREAT. The case, dial and the crystal are in excellent condition. It has a leather after market strap which is just OK and which I will replace. Generally all function on the watch work well and keeps excellent time. The only small thing that needs repair is the pusher to set the week for the 52 week dial. The week movement works OK it is just the setting mechanism.

For the price I am certainly not complaining. Since the watch is almost 13 years old I was planning to get it fully serviced anyway and I am sure it will be easy to fix the week pusher during the service.

All said it was a great purchase and I was lucky.

One other thing to consider regarding purchasing on eBay is that with their new Buyer Protection Program, you are covered no matter what. So even if it had ended up being counterfeit, you would have been safe and received your money back. Buying on eBay is a no brainer now, although you still want to go with reputable sellers and deals that make sense, as you'd much rather get what you want in the first place rather than have to file a claim. I don't think the program is available worldwide yet, but it is for anyone purchasing on eBay.com.

Bump
I am doing a search for ebay buyer protection and came up with this thread.
Anyone tested the policy ?
IE getting $ back for a fake watch and/or fraudulent auction ?

Unfortunately I have had to test the Ebay buyer proection plan on 2 occasions - not for watches but for dive gear. In both instances I bought items from seemly reputable sellers who simply vanished at least virtually. In both cases Ebay refunded me. In one case, it was after 2 months and in the second after about a month (however, in the second case I was one of about 11 buyers who had been ripped off and I was not the first to complain).

Hope this helps
