So, for 2017 SIHH AP have "updated" the Royal Oak Chrono. Worth noting that these updates consist of (drum roll please!) new dials! Woo hoo! Really pushing the boat out there AP!

Oh and somehow AP (as one of the so called "Holy Trinity" of watchmakers) STILL can't manage to put an in-house movement in these damn things! To me it honestly beggars belief that a watchmaker considered as one of the very VERY best in the world still relies on an outsourced movement. Sure the Frederic Piguet 1185 is a great calibre but that's hardly the point IMO at this end of the watchmaking spectrum. Lazy, and frankly pathetic.

Anyway here are these "new" versions -

That all said, this one is quite nice! (Nice price too! )

The all ceramic perpetual is pretty impressive. I'm not sure what they're doing with the divers in the bright colors. I know they came out with the bright chrono divers last year but I'm not sure how those sold since I believe they were boutique only.

I would gladly take that ceramic perpetual! Their case and bracelet in full ceramic is pretty amazing. I like some of the new contrasting sub dials that they are offering on the chronos.

Yeah AP are a really odd brand for me. I've long hankered after a ROO (either the Safari or the "Vampire", but the cost is always step too far me) but for all their history and heritage they also produce some utter monstrosities, including some of the truly hideous bling-bling, jewel-encrusted rapper-style ROO's, that look like Invictas by any other name. And as I said above I can't stand the fact they still use outsourced movements and chrono modules in a number of their pieces. Even the ROO is only half in-house as the chrono module on top of their in-house base is a Dubois Depraz creation. For a brand allegedly at the absolute pinnacle of watchmaking, I think this is unforgiveable.....especially when you consider standard service costs can run into thousands even when there's nothing wrong!

I really like the idea of a high-end sports watch like the RO and ROO, as I can't ever imagine the likes of Patek and VC going down that route, but IMO AP have damaged their image with some of the hideous things they've produced (including those bright dive chronos) : they should've kept in classy.....and got the lack of full in-house sorted out instead. IMHO of course!

AP really never appealed to me. The design looks old. Not a fan.

Im with you Driver. I can't believe they are so sought after even if they outsource part of their movement....
