That cartier does not do much for me either. I would take a Rad over it anyday, which I am sure sounds appaling to you. I sure we won't agree on all watches, so let's just agree that you people have no taste

I think I need some of your time Altair - I need someone to explain the whole Panerai thing to me. They just leave me cold - I can appreciate them from an engineering perspective, but aesthetically they do nothing for me.

That Cartier isn't so great either, but if I had to go for a pure dress watch I'd be looking in the Zenith camp (hell who am I kidding - I'd wear a Breitling and not care if anyone else thought it was dressy enough)

I'll chip-in here, being every bit an addict as Altair...

I can understand exactly what you mean, in respect to Panerai, and while I probably won't convince you, here are my 2 cents.

There's nothing else like it

Simple really. I got 'turned on' to Panerai when I noticed my Breitling AD was wearing one - asked what it was, and got hooked on the chunky crown guard (I'm easy to please!) and the fact that the production was in hundreds rather than millions. It's so nice not to have the same as everybody else - but I'll admit, in the country town where I live, there aren't many Bretlings either!

I went thru a few, I'll admit, but finally found what I liked in terms of the 'look' and size of what I wanted, and that will hopefully arrive for me to collect this weekend. A Panerai wall clock it may be, but it has everything I like about the brand. This particular one has a sandwich dial (amazingly bright in total darkness), it's an automatic in-house movement, and it's in a case I personally prefer above all the other shapes.

However, this in no way excludes my liking other manufacturers, and I admit to quite liking some Cartier, JLC, Patek etc. and perhaps one day I'll veer off and satisfy my yearning.

One fundamental flaw with me (and I'm sure there are many) is that I'm a bit of a f***wit when it comes to wearing nice things - I always manage to do damage to whatever it is - watches, shirts, trousers, shoes - you name it, I've got a closet full of damaged things - and this is why I get on with Panerai so well - I don't think it would take me long to wreck a Patek, just from ordinary day to day uselessness!

I certainly don't have anything against the brand as a concept, just haven't found one that remotely 'speaks to me', and because of the overall similarity I'm not sure that I will.

I'll freely confess to being more of a Breitling guy than a watch guy, but that is changing - it's just a long reach for me to see a Panerai on my wrist.

Mind you, I said that about the blacksteel.....

You know I used to be the same way, hated panerai. Now look at me

Have you seen one on the flesh? the thing about Panerai is that they suck in pictures, but look amazing in real life. The 1950 case is in my opinion THE best watch case ever. I do not think there is anyway to improve on it.

Yeah, I've seen and handled a few, and I can certainly admire them as achievements - I just don't get that sense of wanting to stare at my wrist all the time that I get with some other watches.

Yeah, maybe if I ever grow up

It would have one distinct advantage - my wife wouldn't want one every time I got one for myself

Panerai never had that long standing appeal for me the first time around, perhaps this time it will. I saw a guy wearing a 1950 the other day... cool guy. I'm really stoked waiting for my straps though... to be honest, i find the strap part keeps my interest going without having to spend $5000 on another watch :)

Brian,

Check out the 2 tone Roadster Chronograph XL, those things are great

I like the two tone, but I'm concerned about scratches.

Here ya go,

Now this is a dress watch. The top one with the White dial is the front and what you see on the bottom is the back of the watch. Only 1.2 Million

Brian,

You've been around here long enough to have purchased your Cape Cods by now ! I wear 2 Gold rings, a white Gold and a yellow Gold. I bang the hell out of them daily. The Cape Cods get the scratches out of Gold faster than they do Stainless so don't worry about that. It's time for a 2 tone for you !
