I've been looking at the 2007 Panerai catalogue and unless I've missed it, there aren't any automatic movements without the cyclops on the crystal. I like the looks of the 111 & 112, but there isn't an automatic in that style. What about models from other years?

I'm pretty sure there are no 'Base' models (existant or earlier) without a date with cyclops - it's worth mentioning that on Panerai the cyclops is inside and not stuck on the outside like with Rolex etc. This makes it less obvious.

To get an automatic with date (and no cyclops) you'll have to look at the Chronos - 250/251 for example, or the Manifaturra (in-house movements) which use the 1950 style case, and a large domed crystal.

I've just ordered a 270 - this is the automatic in-house movement in a 1950 style case with a sandwich dial and date (no cyclops)- everything that I like about Panerai in one watch!

The 270 is sweet looking. Sportback. I hope it serves you well. I'd like something similar to the 104, but without the date cyclops. I have never warmed to that "eye".

I recently got a 288 - this is my first Radiomir and it's beautiful - but it doesn't have a date...I thought about it a while, and decided that as I have a car with a clock and date, a mobile phone with a date and I'm often surrounded by computers with dates all over them, why on earth did I feel the need for a date on my watch. So I bought it.

It's great, I love wearing it etc. but the mere fact that it doesn't have a date bugs me !

I also own a 253 - this is the famous Flyback Regatta and is one of my all time favourites - 1950 style case, domed crystal etc. but NO F*** DATE - this is why the 270 is so appealing to me.

I originally started this reply thinking that I'd try to convince you that not having a date really isn't a big deal - but sadly, for me (as I suspect for you!!) it is - I think in all honesty, you have three choices:

1: get a 'Base' model without date - you'll want to keep this whatever you get afterwards

2: save up and get a slightly more expensive model WITH date (and no cyclops)

3: both the above

Great choice!!!! The 270 and 275 are my grail Panerais. Fantastic watches.

I had a look on the Panerai websitethe other day and the 270 with a 10 day reserve AND an automatic movement is just awesome. Too rich for me though unfortunately.

And for me - God knows how I'm ging to get this past the g/f - this said, I get the impression she's given up trying! Certainly not a question of who wears the trousers - I've already waxed lyrical on the subject of her bum - can't seem to get enough of it

We had a Panerai 'meal' in October (already mentioned here) and I was able to look at the 270 and talk to Emanuella the Head honcho (honchesse?) at Panerai France - I still haven't got a decent explication as to why you would want a 10 reserve on an automatic watch. But I must admit the movement is very very nice, the 1950 case and HUGE domed crystal exactly what I like, so what the hell - if I can put in down for a few days while I wear another watch, why not!

Why do you even need a watch these days? I think its just for the sake of it. The movement is a triumpth and the complications beutifully executed.

Look at a Tourbillion, a 40$ G shock will be more accurate and require less servicing, but there is something about the tecnical achievemnt......
