Just thought I'd introduce myself to the group..............

My name is Peter

I'm retired

I love watches and have quite a lot of them ranging from very old pocket watches to ultra modern superquartz; and from Alpha to Omega, (literally  ).

I believe that there is no cure for this addiction.

However, I understand that the symptoms may be made easier by talking about my addiction with fellow addicts.

I have but two Breitlings in my collection at present

an AVI from 1995

Image

and an Aerospace from 2006

They both give me great pleasure.

I enjoy in equal measure the mechanical masterpiece that is the AVI and the technical brilliance that is the Aerospcace :D

It also helps that they are, to my eye, both very beautiful watches. :) :)

There, I've come out of the cupboard........... and I feel a little better already.

p.s. Hope the pictures aren't too big - couldn't find anything about size of pics anywhere.

Welcome to the group!

Sounds like you are quite the watch fanatic. I am also a watch addict, and find that coming to these forums only feeds the addiction! But its healthier than many other things I could be doing!

:)

Great pics! The AVI is a nice watch.

Thanks for the welcome Admin, and yes, I am very much a watch fanatic. It really started when my father passed on to me the pocket watch my grandmother bought for him during the 2nd world war, (a rather beautiful Waterburry Series N which he didn't wear any more but wanted me to). That was around 22 years ago and I haven't looked back since.

My collection is somewhat mixed and varied - no particular theme, I just buy what I like, (when I can afford it  ).

Oh, and the AVI is one of my favourite watches. :)

p.s.

Great community you have here. :)

 I totally agree - that AVI is a beauty and one I've not seen before. My interest in Breitlings started around 1996/7 and I'm pretty sure the AVI doesn't feature in the 1996 Chronolog. (I'm gonna check in a mo!) Nice watches Peter!

And much more fun too

Actually, I've always wondered why they call it 'Alcoholics Anonymous'. I mean, the first thing you say is "Hi, I'm Peter and I'm..............." Not very anonymous

Thanks Driver8.

I recently got hold of a copy of the 1995 catalogue, (my AVI is from 1995), and the nearest model listed is the Aviastar; which has a few differences, but has the same engine.

Am trying to track down an earlier catalogue which has the AVI in it. I believe the AVI was produced between 1990 and 1995.

Ahhh!! i just took it out and wound it a few times and had it running for about 48 hours.. within 5 seconds a day too.. its pretty good. Then suddenly it stopped!!! i woke up and now it won't wind any more. I remember winding it the night before and it was getting hard to wind it.. like the crown was tigher.. then in the morning now it doesn't run and it when i wind it it just clicks and nothing gets wound :(

Know how i can fix it???

Sorry to hear that Admin :(

Is it a key wind or a stem wind watch?

If it's a key wind than the mainspring could be broken as the key works directly on the barrel and spring so there's not much else to go wrong.

If it's a stem wind then it sounds like something is not meshing properly in the winding/setting mechanism. Does it mesh correctly when you set the hands or does it click/skip in that position too?

Either way, looks like a visit to a watchmaker is in order.

I have two wristwatches with my watchie at the moment........

This one, from 1919 has a similar problem to the one you describe, though it does partly wind but clicks and skips a lot when winding....

Image

and this one has exactly the opposite problem. It hand winds perfectly, but clicks like mad when I set the hands....

Image

Due to the amount of work he has on at the moment I'm unlikely to see them again before Christmas

Its a stem wind.. and the only watchmaker around here I know is a certified Rolex guy and charges a LOT of money.. :(

There is an antique store in town here that the guy seems to know people that fix all sorts of stuff. I'm going to stop in and ask him.
