Back again.

This is a delightfully exhausting game that I'm slowly getting better at, but this one has me in a bit of a quandary.

https://www.chrono24.com/breitling/spri ... 568363.htm

This example is a 1969 (per the serial no). The white hands seem to show up in several examples of this reference out there but then, so do the orange hands. The hands on this one seem to have more white than the catalog and brochure scans that I find online, and it seems that most of the 2212's that I find online are actually sporting the orange hands.

So what is the correct configuration on the black dial 2212?

I think orange hands would be deemed correct from the simple fact that it's difficult to see white hands on a white background.

David, the designers didn't think so, it seems ;)

both variations seem to be correct - to add a bit to the confusion, the 2212 in the "Big 69" catalog has white hands, but the black base seems a lot longer than on the physical examples I remember seing.

edit: the c24 listing looks lovely and the price is great.

Yes, your correct Fred. I guess what threw me was the "amount of white on the hand" on a white background in OPs post, and looking again I think maybe they are not correct hands? The black should extend further along the hands like in the catalogue you posted? A few other examples on google like the chrono24 so maybe ok, but not a desired configuration in my book.

have seen quite a lot of those hands, Dave, so assume they are original - and none I remember with the longer black base, btw.

like in the catalogue you posted. So you mean you have not seen the catalogue type in the flesh?

Thank you both for your thoughtful responses. I find it interesting how it can be such a puzzle i.e. so many variations on a single reference.

I went ahead and purchased the watch and scheduled a service for it. When it shows up I'll post a few pictures here.

Thanks again gentlemen!

An update on this watch. It arrived today, and it is quite the pretty piece.

The seller had indicated to me that, in fact, it was in dire need of a service and was not keeping time well. Actually, it was losing 15 minutes per *day*. I contacted my watchmaker and she confirmed that her friend who has an account with Breitling would be able to do the full service, so I went ahead with the purchase.

I took it to her today for review and to get it to her colleague. She opened it up and noted that it was dry, and that one of the inca prongs was broken and thus the jewel is cattywompus. Beyond that, the lume in the minute hand is starting to flake. a Re-lume or NOS hands were discussed and I indicated that I did not want any re-luming, polishing, or "newing" up the piece but if original glass, pushers or matching signed crown were available for replacement we could discuss. Given that absolute water resistance isn't my motivation for the acquisition, we all seemed to be in agreement. Even with the significant work that needs to be done, it will come in below what all of the current 2212 examples are fetching, so I'm not despairing yet.

So that's the update. It is headed out for it's spa retreat. He is out for vacation next week, so it will likely be a couple of months before we see the return.
