It's rough but is anything really wrong with this? I've never seen an all black Cosmonaute before.

Looks OK to me. All black was only around for a short period in the early 60s. Supposedly reference 809 was used from 1962, and transition to reverse-panda dial was around the same time. There is a pretty good history over at WUS

The one on eBay seems to be in good condition. Case is nice and sharp, with just a few unfortunate dings here and there. Hands look good too, but not sure about the chrono seconds hand as I have seen both the arrow hand most often seen on early Navitimers and also the drop style hand that is similar to what you see on Speedmasters, and is on this example.

Untouched correct example .
@Arcadelt : the sweephand is correct and specific to 1962 and 63 early Cossies.

Thanks, I appreciate the education. Vintage watches are a minefield, but I continue to prod slowly with my bayonet.

The best possible source about early Navi 806 and Cosmonaute 809 is Kurt Broendum

I would call it "honest" lovely condition, as there's a lot of edge wear to the outer chapter of the dial, but it will definitely appeal to some people.

Exciting top see where it ends though.
