Post subject:  Can you please help identify my 40s/50s Breitling

Hello all,

My lovely wife bought me the watch pictured below for our first wedding adversary.

I have looked through the breitling-museum website, however I cannot find the exact one.

On the rear it has 170 stamped along with the Breitling logo.
the nearest match is one from the 40's on the breitling-museum website that says:
Breitling ref 170 cal. Venus 170 with 17j with from the 40's

I would very much like to find out the exact year and model of Breitling and as much as I can about the watch and then get the correct leather strap for it as the one currently on it although nice is not a genuine Breitling one.

Many thanks for everyone who takes time to read this and anyone who can help I am very grateful.

be so kind to try to read between the lines ...
it is a present, enjoy the watch. stop trying to "authenticate" it.
and "breitling-museum.com" is 80%+ fakes, so not a reference point.

Here is a pic of the 1942-1944 Breitling catalog - page 6 - showing the ref . 170 .
It is difficult to strictly refer to period official catalogues as they were illustrated and not pictured .
On page 3 of the catalog 9 executions of chronographic divisions were illustrated and customer was asked to state above the execution chosen for his chronograph .
For this reason you can find watches with the same ref but different dials .
Ref 170 was categorised in the 13"' low priced chronographs range - steel case with rectangular pushers - encasing a Venus 170 with 45' totaliser .

All Breitling watches are identified by 2 stamped numbers :
1/ the ref number => 170 for yours
2/ the serial number => see inside your caseback
Referring to this table viewtopic.php?f=11&t=31437 you will be able to find the fabrication year . No datas available here or elsewhere for SN before 1944 .

Straps and buckles were "generic" at this period . Just choose a vintage look strap assorted to your watch and avoid any modern Breitling strap, it would not match !
In the same register , any doubt that Breitling engraving on the outside of caseback is an " addition" ... but it is not a major concern , just enjoy your watch as a beloved gift.

Interesting that he posted his inquiry in the "Vintage Breitling Fake / Franken Identification" section.

Perhaps he is testing the waters... Or perhaps I am being cynical again.

Or perhaps a moderator moved it there because it was the appropriate place for the question to be asked.
