It's almost insulting how little effort was put into making this look like a real Breitling -- and I'm no Fred or Roff...

This is actually a good example of how basic common sense can help you determine whether the watch is real.

Forget whether you know anything about the model, just consider whether the logo style is consistent between dial, movement and caseback. Look at model and serial numbers to ensure that they exist and are consistent with Breitling formats. Look at the quality of finishing on the movement and consider whether that is similar to other Breitling movements.

There are a lot of cues here that the watch isn't right, even if you have never seen what a vintage Datora should look like.

Is this a new watch that they try to make look old? Or is it just an old fake?

It's an old no name watch.

There are so many vintage generic watches available for no money it's pointless to make new ones, just take a generic watch, stamp a dial and engrave Breitling liberally.
