I was recently asked to look at friends watch, it's got a Landeron 248 in it but has leaked water through the crown and had gone rusty. I've cleaned all the rust off and got the watch working again but one screw was well rusted in and weak, needless to say it didn't come out clean. I have tried using a screw extractor but all I've succeeded in doing is break a few of the extractor pins, I've used some penatrating fluid to get into the thread but that hasn't had any effect. Can anyone shed some light on best practice on using the screw extractor so something else that may help. Thanks, |

Can you just drill the screw out - that's sometimes easier than trying to remove it. |

I did think that but assuming it would take the thread out as well I don't have a tap that small |

Wondered if you could drill through the centre of the screw without damaging the threads - tight, but would remove the structural integrity of the screw. Only other thing that might be worth trying is putting it through an ultrasonic cycle to see if that loosens it up. Otherwise you are looking at more brute force solutions using a staking set or similar which may also damage the thread. |

That might work, will see if I can dig out a drill bit small enough. It's been through the ultrasonic learn a few times to help remove rust. I'll try drilling it but after that I don't think there's much of an option without damaging the thread. |
