A few months ago I went to my local Torneau dealer to get the battery replaced on my watch. My watch is out of warranty but the battery was free of charge. Today I went swimming with it and noticed that the watch was wet inside and acting crazy, the arrows were going around for no reason. Took the watch to the dealer and explained what happened to them. The salesman that was helping me was telling me that the crown was open, when in fact I know the watch crown is a push button type. Anyway, the manager intervened, took the watch to the repairman and finally told me that they will send it for assessment and will let me know. I never had any problems with this watch and always went swimming with it with no issues. Is it possible they didn't do a good job when they replaced the battery?

I would wait for the assessment, but pay particular attention to what they say about the case back and the stem seal. They need to identify, if they can, how water got into your watch.

If the battery change was free then that's what you got - a battery change. No gasket replacement and no pressure test to ensure that the water resistance hadn't been compromised by having the back open. Get them to pressure test the watch and identify where the failure is.

"Will withstand splashes or brief emersion in water, but is not suitable for swimming."
From Breitling source on 100m rating.

To me any way you are Lucky not to have problems before.

I hope they sort it out for you but I would not Reccomend swimming with it the the Future.

You pay enough for a battery changeover through an AD that it seems incongruous that a static pressure test is not part of the replacement procedure.

If a seal is not mounted correctly or is pinched on the way through after a battery change, then it should be standard fair to at least test this before handing the watch back to the customer. Why would any service business leave themselves exposed like this when its so simple and so easy to perform, while you wait!

That is the 100 feet (30m) rating.
The 100 m rating states "Suitable for swimming and snorkeling".

Apologies, to all. Wessa is correct. Don't know what I was thinking.

Don't worry about it breanach. I think I would fear wearing my Lings to a swimming pool or at the beach anyway. Chemical or salt water, aaahhh nope. A Casio G Shock would be more my style.

No worries b-78, we all get our wires crossed from time to time and I agree with Jim, it does not make much difference to me. 30 or 100m rating does not boost my confidence, my Breitling I not going swimming.
The only Breitling in my collection that has been known to go swimming in the past is the Colt Ocean which is rated at 500m

I think that all the seals are made out of synthetic rubber, and can take a lot more abuse than salt water or chlorine. Only thing you have to do is wash the watch really well with soap and water. But the seals are a lot tougher than you think.

Recommendation is to get seals checked é replaced annually if regularly diving in salt water as salt is hugely corrosive.

Absolutely right. However if only a few times per year used in water, then there's nothing to worry about. The seals can take it.

This watch never gave me any trouble before. I went swimming with it once before for a day in my pool at home and it was fine. This was the very first battery replacement and from an AD you expect them to take care of a timepiece the right way. I have cheaper watches that I have used and that are even older than my Aerospace and they are fine. Is there a possibility that the crown seals were bad on a 5 year old watch?

The watch is out of warranty but I'm convinced that they didn't take the proper precautions when replacing the battery and that's how water got in. What I don't like is that Tournaeu will assess the watch first. So I'm sure they'll say it wasn't properly maintained by the owner. How much maintenance do you do on an Aerospace? I understand an automatic watch hum. What's your feeing about this?

The seals are made from synthetic rubber and are very tough to fail especially if the watch was never in salt water or chlorine. I'm not sure what battery replacement procedure entails with the Aerospace, but since you're not a watchmaker, how will you know the seals condition? They should have checked everything for you and make a recommendation of what else needs to be replaced. But at the same time you should have requested to check the seals and have it water pressure tested. Please let us know what happens.
