Sorry guys...I'm a noob....I can't figure out the search function.

I'm interested in any discussion on BlackBirds as that's the model I own and obviously don't want to post a topic that's already been discussed, but I'm having difficulty getting the search function to provide direct links to specific conversations.

So don't :guns: me

Am I screwing up or could the search function be not so user friendly?

I actually find the search fairly useful.

If you are finding that you are getting too many reults then try changing the 'search within' option to 'Topic Titles Only' - that way you will only get topics that have the word you search for in the title.

Also, if you click on the topic in the search results rather than the specific post it will take you to thr top of the thread.

Remember you can also select which forum to search on so you can exclude some areas (hold down Ctrl while selscting for multiple areas).

I'm also going to move this to the help area.

I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of the way the built in search works. I find it doesn't do stemming very well, and has a hard time with commonly used words. When I really want to find something, I use Google. You can tell Google to limit the search to this site by doing a query like:
site:breitlingsource.com Blackbird

Disclaimer: I work for Google.

Actually, that was way more helpful....I don't care if you work for google :)

Thanks for the other suggestion, but as a person who works in digital marketing, I personally find the search function especially difficult for noobs.

Actually, I find a lot of functions on this site difficult to manage/find.

I'm glad this site exists - but there are definitely some slight adjustments that could be made to make it more user-friendly.

The search is part of the bulleting board software - phpBB3. It's an open source platform and realistically all that members can expect for a site that is decidedly non commercial in nature. Admin runs this site as a hobby and it costs him way more money and time than he brings in with the few adverts.

phpBB3 may not be perfect, but there are a lot worse out there.

I'd agree, that phpBB3 is pretty good. But search has never been one of the stronger parts of phpBB. IIRC, it is just using the fulltext searching features in MySQL, which have always been broken. Sphinx, which is the search engine Craigslist uses, is a lot more advanced. I believe there's a plugin for phpBB3 to use Sphinx.

Of course none of this is Admin's fault. This is among the nicest and fastest phpBB sites I've seen.

<troll>
But seriously, how can you expect anything written in PHP to be any good? :)

one search I've never been able to do is a search on 6.75 models - both "Bentley" and "6.75" are too common apparently - any clues??? :idontgetit:

As others have said, the issue is caused by the phpbb3 indexing system. From what I've read, overcoming this problem (set Common Words Threshold to zero) can cause other problems.

As suggested, probably the best workaround is to use Google. It returns entries on the whole site, not just the forum. Here's a couple of examples

Bentley & 6.75
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&num=30&newwindow=1&q=site%3Abreitlingsource.com+bentley+6.75&btnG=Search

Blackbird
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&num=30&newwindow=1&q=site%3Abreitlingsource.com+blackbird&btnG=Search

Hope this helps.

You can use the search operators intitle: and inurl: to narrow it further within the forums.
