My 1964 806 will be going in for a service in the near future. I have already assessed that the crystal is wrong, so I need a new slightly domed one. The hour, minute and Chrono-seconds hands need to be white, so either re-painted or replaced. What else do Forum members believe might need attention?

Thanks. Any idea how tough it is to get a proper crystal?

Easy. I use a Sternkruz M 386, but others have reported 384 or 388 - maybe some variance in bezel manufacture? Can find them online from many parts suppliers, but also here in the UK from Cousins and in the USA from Otto Frei

It would be a good opportunity to restore the butchered case sides .

Could you be more specific what you mean by "butchered"?

My 2 cents = the detail on your photos is pretty amazing. Not with an iPhone I assume? massive detailed magnification like that shows every possible flaw. I assume your case in person looks OK? If so, I would avoid a polish - it is the modern day sin in watch collecting!

Thanks David. I agree about the detail. I normally try not to look at watches at more than twice their size, precisely for the reasons you outline, but on this occasion I thought it was best to show the watch warts-and-all so that people could provide feedback. I have no intention of having the watch brushed and polished to look like new, unless the watch was clearly incorrectly finished at some point in it's past. For the record, I don’t think that is case based on examination of the best NOS examples I could find, but happy to take advice from those that know better.

As I understand it:

Sin No. 1 is dial refinishing
Sin No. 2 is overpolishing of cases
Sin No. 3 is reluming

Photos were taken with an iPhone 8 and Camera+ app in macro mode.

Cheers

Harry

Ok... My 2 cents. Have it serviced, a competent dial cleaning would be ok but otherwise leave it alone. If it's not in NOS condition than its not. Too many try to do much to restore to like new and anything that is 50 years old should have some wear, it just is. Reluming if not done properly can be worse than what you have. I feel there is something to be said about being original. Replace the hands if you want but keep the originals in case you sell later, new owner might want them!!
Otherwise, wear it and love it. You can spend a lot and not really make a huge difference except to your wallet.

The other way to look at it is that all 3 are really important watchmaking skills, by they have a time and place to be used.

True, and I'd be happy to employ those skills if they were warranted.

If it were mine I would appreciate the visible signs of ageing combined with being worn rather than cossetted. I have a similar model in "much better" condition and to be honest it doesn't have half the character that yours does.
