Post subject:  What was this in Phillips?!?

Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me how this managed to pass through Phillips?... Unless my knowledge on vintage Datora's needs updating am I right in thinking this is at best a Breitling dial and god knows what else (Maybe a Speedmaster case middle???)...

it took us years to prove the ref. 2130 Chrono-Matic that many doubted a bit was correct until we found a 1975 flyer showing it. this case is very similar to the 2130, same lyra lugs - and we had Datora and Chronomatic variations of many case designs.

so I would have wanted to see the caseback and movement of this before I jump to conclusions ... on the fence and interested for now.

I appreciate what you are saying but I would say your Chrono-matic is different on a few points...

'Lyra' lugs are longer and thinner on yours (could be the photo angle) the Phillips has wider inner curve.

Pushers are wider on Phillips and have case guards like on a Speedmaster

The bezel on the Phillips looks to be a plastic/Bakelite insert and completely different design

The inner tachy on the Phillips looks more like something from a Wakmann/Gigandet chrono and in no way matches up with the Datora dial.

You can actually see the inner edge of the actual tachymetre scale that's already on the black Datora dial peeping under the white Tachy insert that's been added.

That Datora dial is more likely from a ref 34 or 2033 style case.

Yes it would be nice to see caseback and movement but I think there is plenty of evidence from what we can already see.....

Does anyone have anymore thoughts on the Phillips Datora or have I pretty much summed it up?... and if so my initial question remains. How was it allowed in the auction and seemingly passed un-noticed?...

Omega did not make their own cases for the Speedmaster and I have seen another watch brand use such a case, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Breitling may have used those cases too.

Of course it could be a complete franken as you suggest.

agree after the pic comparison that the Phillips "Datora" was most probably fake.

not the first very, very questionable watch we've seen them sell, across all brands.
