There is an 817 listed for sale on watchuseek. €15000 seems like a very high price to me.

I wonder why you think that? Market price is set by the market, and the last one that went to an open, un-marketed auction went for €8300 on eBay, and only at the last minute. Where were the last sales that suggest that this one is worth €15000?

So given the eBay sale, the market value has dropped?

no , I think the eBay price was a fluke , typically these sell for double , but many serious buyers either dont have the time to peruse ebay or dont trust buying through ebay as they think its too much of a gamble

Well, obviously I know nothing about the vintage market and I'll stick to buying new watches - much safer and better for my wallet.

that I surely disagree with ;)

if you spent your money on vintage instead of new the last few years (Breitling , Heuer , Omega, Rolex , Enicar and some others ) you'd made your wallet very happy

My recollection of that listing was that for most of the time it was listed it was available only to Italian bidders, and then he changed it to worldwide shipping towards the end. So lots of buyers may not have even seen the listing. Agree with Dracha that the eBay price achieved was low.

Of course it is low if everyone talks them up - that sets expectations. The eBay one is not the only one I know about, and the other was on offer for €7700. Apart from those sold through dealers (with commensurate mark up) and auctions with large auction houses (like the one at Monaco with an even bigger buyers premium), that's two at around €8000. but who knows what marketing channels open up true market value.

Anyway, we'll know soon enough if someone is willing to set the value of 817s at a level above collector grade vintage Speedmasters, which have been climbing high on steady demand. But again, what do I know...

I dont understand this comment , you say that vintage Breitling watches have not been (or should not be) climbing on steady demand ?

I think that if you do a search on sales from a few years ago you will find that these 817's (and others) have been keeping pace with Speedy's ?

here's one that sold for $2900 7 years ago. and I remember that I thought that was a lot of money for that watch , little did I know

No, not at all - the history of Breitling deserves to be recognised and thanks to a lot of work by you and the other super collectors, they are getting there. All I was saying is that if this one sells at €15000 the value of this 817 will be much higher than an equivalent 1970s Speedmaster based on prices quoted over at Speedmaster 101, and that due to the few known sales, this one price can set expectations for future sales.

I think they have outstripped the value of equivalently dated Speedmasters; however, it was a sloppy comparison on my part, as the two watches are really not comparable, as one is mass produced and supply of the other was restricted. A better comparison for the 817 would be other CP-1 and CP-2 watches from Zenith or Leonidas.

Ultimately (and there is no shame in it), owners have a vested interest in talking sales up and potential buyers have an interest in talking them down - it's just the way of the world.

is there not a concern on the lume to this otherwise good example of 817?Relume?The Leonidas cp2 is much nicer in my humble opinion and the Zenith Cairellis are now astronomical in price...............I agree with Dracha on the happy wallet if only I had kept all the vintage watches I owned over time instead of chasing rainbows!! The Heuer Sternzeit being the biggest regret -has anyone else regretted letting go of a piece?
