if by "super-collector" you mean those who make it a priority to devote countless hours and energy learning, contributing, helping, researching, and then ultimately hunting vintage watches which are off the radar, then i agree with you.

hunting vintage watches is nothing but a skill which develops naturally with practice and knowledge.
and, for the record, the collectors i know with the best collections also happen to be the most helpful.

lastly, the collectors i know with the largest and most appealing collections have purchased 99% of their watches in the past few years over the internet, and certainly not where they live.

keep learning and hunting and maybe one day very soon you'll find the auction for the watch you have been tirelessly hunting, and maybe it will stay well under the radar. and i hope when that happens it is not plastered on a public forum (where even non-members can see it) and you are able to buy the watch for a very affordable price.

Not all collectors have the same advantage as others in the collecting game. Some have an advantage because of where they live, - I do not, so I seek advantages wherever I can get them, and communities like this balance the equilibrium a little. If someone wants to find a bargain, let them walk the streets of ancient little European towns, which I can't do. At least let me have my level playing field on the Internet.

Unfortunately this collecting game can be a bit "sewn up" by a handful of super-collectors, some of whom I suspect then further use their ["foremost collector"] position to their advantage.

PS. For anyone who is interested, here is a recent discussion on this very topic over at Omega Forums:

and the buyer will find out that there is NO correct substitute available to replace the cracked crystal - he'll have to live w/ the incorrect (i.e. too low) ATC, so the watch will never look correct.

Im not sure people are too fanatical on crystals (yet) as long as theyre not overly detracting...

At the end othe day the old adage prevails - buy the best you can find or afford. But can you find another one?

in that price range + maybe 15-20%: yes.
the incorrect crystal is an eyesore, Dave, as it changes the watch profile dramatically; would be a deal breaker for me.

So we are in vintage Speedmaster territory, and a similar price to the 817 that sold on eBay two weeks ago. Looks like vintage Breitlings are heading upwards too.

That's a very interesting viewpoint. Thank you so much for your sage advice. It's always good to benefit from the knowledge and experience of those more practiced in these matters.

I also collect military watches and there were some other barn-burning results in this sale

Lot#386 hammered at £6500 estimate was £40-£60
Lot #387 hammered at £4200 estimate was £40-£60
Lot#415 hammered at £1700 estimate was £30-£50

Just shows you that bidders ignore stupid estimates and pay market values.
