Hello guys,

My dad said I could have this watch is I wanted it. The watch runs well but the crown needs replacing and the chrono's dont work.

My question is, what would a restoration typically cost and what does a watch like this typically sell for.

Secondly, how can I find out the model year for this particular watch?

Thank you all in advance for helping a newbie.

Well I just paid nearly $3000 for a 1966 version and this is a slightly earlier, If you can get the back off to check the serial no then we could tell you a deffinate year but be carefull have a jewler do it as you may damage the watch in getting the back off, Restoration costs depend on if its running or if it requires parts, I would send it to Craig Chronodeco to do the work but bear in mind it could cost you from a third up to half the value of the watch or more to get this baby up to like new.

You have to ask yourself if you want to turn a quick profit or you prefer to have the watch, Id keep the watch but if you were to sell it you may get somewhere around $1000 or more if its working less is not.

Sorry just seen its gold coloured is it gold plated or solid gold?

Stainless steel back normally denotes a gold plated case.

In terms of values, as a really really basic rule of thumb with vintage Navi's - Solid gold (most expensive) - Steel - then plated gold.

Good luck with it.

If it were 18k gold then it would have a gold caseback as Yaffle says.

A few things that are odd with the caseback on this - early ones had the serial number inside the caseback, but this isn't that early - looks like an early 60s transition piece, and also doesn't have 806 on the casbeack.

Wouldn't want to offer opinions on value until I see what's going on inside.

Thanks for the help. I'll try to find a jeweler to open the case for me. I do like the watch, but I would really prefer a stainless steel look(it's gold plated). Never been a real big fan of gold.

I have the original leather strap, but its pretty beat up. I would really like to restore it, but since I probably won't wear it often so it depends on the cost. I'm also guessing if I do eventually sell or swap it the restoration will increase its value.

Depending on the work that's needed you will likely make more by paying for the restoration yourself and then selling. You tend not to make money back on regular servicing, but with a watch with problems buyers are wary of committing because there are no guarantees that it doesn't become an expensive exercise.

Visually, this watch looks OK, so you may be able to get away with just a mechanical restoration which will help manage costs.

I don't have the watch with me right now, but I do beleive it has a very faint 806 on the caseback. Once I have a jeweler open it up I will take some pics.

Thanks!

That makes more sense.

I didn't doubt that it was original, it was just weird not seeing 806. Serial numbers can be a bit hit and miss in terms of location.

Not if the outer slide rule is original - there were no all black slide rules that late.

This looks just like it. I will try to take it to a jeweler tomorrow. Is there a special tool needed to open the caseback? I have a friend who likes to tinker with watches and he might have the appropriate one.

Thanks again guys

I didn't even see the red box on the OPs - old age is obviously taking the eyesight

@ the OP - get a watchmaker to remove the caseback - we know it needs a service but we don't want to damage the movement any further.
