If I were to get an early Navitimer, say one from the 1970s or 80s, would it be possible and "correct" to put a modern leather strap on it?

Definitely possible, you just need the right lug width (and right buckle width if it comes with the original buckle).

No reason why it wouldn't be 'correct' - you are unlikely to find an original leather strap these days, at least one in useable condition, and the modern Breitling strap look very good with these pieces in my opinion. Of course there are also any number of aftermarket straps of varying qualities. For something rather unique try www.abp-paris.com.
