Hi all. Just joined your wonderful forum.

Need some help identifying (including the movement used), dating and valuing this watch on behalf of my brother.

He bought it in Bangkok's Chatuchak market for a few dollars, then spent a bomb sending it to Breitling in Switzerland for a total overhaul that took 12 months.

Engraving on the back has the "B" logo, "Breitling" spelt out, "2928" and "Waterproof".

It looks like they put a new crystal on, together with a signed crown (which was missing when purchased).

The case (looks like stainless steel), dial (reads "Breitling", "17 Jewels", "Waterproof" and "Swiss Made") and lovely blue hands are original, apart from a clean and polish.

Case diameter is approx 36mm and lugs are 18mm.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know this one off the top of my head, I'll hit the books tonight and try and figure it out - no movement photos to help with identification I guess?

Is there a serial number on the outside of the caseback as well as the model number (2928) - I'm guessing not, and is it manual wind or automatic - I'm guessing manual.

Well, I can't find this exact model, and I have to confess it has me confused - or at least the way that Breitling has restored it has me confused.

Let's start with age - without a serial number there's a degree of guess work, but I would estimate that this is an early 50s watch. Without an exact match on the model reference I can't be sure about the movement, but I would expect to see a Felse 4010. In terms of value, unfortunately, not very much. These pieces are in the price guide at around $250, but that is too low in m,y opinion - I would be more in the $400 - $500 range, and with a recent restoration we are probably on the high side of that.

Now, my confusion. I don't think the crown is correct. It looks too thick to me. A signed crown is possible by the 50s (earlier were often plain), but this is an unusual design for this kind of watch. Most of the crowns are thinner with a more pronounced curve. There are some that are flatter tops and thicker sides, but this seems too thick - and it does look too large for the case.

Still - I guess Breitling know more about it than me!

Thanks.

As you say it's hard to tell what is original but i think they just put on a replacement crown without bothering to match the vintage of the watch itself.

No serial number on the back and i don't have the expertise (nor courage even if i did) to open the caseback.

Value is more for interest as my brother doesn't intend to sell it. He bought it for its beautiful dial and blue hands and intends to wear it.

By the way, he spent in excess of US$1000 restoring it!!! And Breitling didn't even bother to fit a new original strap for that amount, it came back from the factory wearing the same tatty faux crocodile strap it had when purchased.

In the absence of further info I guess it goes into the knowledge base until someone who knows better comes along.

Still haven't been able to get a pic of the movement but I suspect they must have put a new mainspring in the handwind movement. the power reserve is pretty impressive - it ran for exactly 48 hours on a full wind!

That is a beautiful watch and a great find. It is something I would definitely wear. Let me know if your brother ever decides to sell it!
