Thought twice about posting this as it's a bit of self promotion, but what the heck - it's a big achievement for me and I'm used to upsetting people on here anyway

As some of you may be aware I do a fair bit of writing as part of my business - articles, white papers, industry analysis, etc. and in the past I have also written a few chapters for different publications. Well, at the beginning of last May I was asked to write a full length book. I was really in two minds about it - the publisher already had a subject that they wanted the book written on and this isn't exactly the prime time to be publishing business books! In the end I agreed, if only because it would help my business - there's certainly no money in it unless you have a celebrity name to sell the book. Well ever since I've been wondering why the heck I agreed to it, 120,000+ words, plus a whole bunch of tables and figures, plus of course the whole editing process.

Well today two things happened that are pretty major milestones - I completed the last piece of content (which is actually bonus online content that is available through the publisher's website) and I received the soft copy production draft from the publisher - basically the final layout minus the index for my review and approval - all 350 pages of it

So after a little more than 10 months of doing something for the book almost every day it is finally done. It's a very weird feeling - knowing that it is going to be put out there for others to judge and that there is nothing that I can do about it now. There are going to be a few weird days ahead I am sure - the day that it goes on Amazon for pre-order, the day that the first copy turns up in the mail, the day that I get the first review, etc. but for now at least it's done - it's now in the hands of the publisher to get it through production and assign an official publication date.

I'm deliberately not providing too much detail here because I don't want anyone to think that I am trying to use the forum to sell books, and it's pretty specialised anyway - organizational risk management within project portfolios (that's not the title), but it is such a sense of relief to finally be done, and a very surreal feeling to see the 'almost' book in the same day.

Roff, I think this is great news! As a community, I personally feel it's good for us to share such things with one another.

Congrats on a great accomplishment. I can only imagine the amount of work that went into this book.

My typing skills leave a lot to be desired as the absence of autocorrect here will frequently attest, but I used to think that my command of the language was quite good. However, having professional editors go through your work and shred it apart is a very humbling experience - you are left under no illusions just how bad a writer you really are!

I actually suggested '50 Shades of Risk' to the publisher and pointed out that it would probably help sales - he wasn't amused! I also had to get some testimonials for the back cover of the book and one person suggested "Far more interesting than the title would leave you to believe"

Even better - when it's published just purchase a copy of the book, mail it to me with a paid return envelope and a cashiers cheque for $100 and I'll happily sign it

Thanks for the comments guys!

Very cool, well done. Big congrats! I am sure the book will be well received based on how you manage things around here. Interesting that you would mention the editing process; from some of your longer posts I thought your writing skills were quite proficient, well thought out and you nicely conveyed your thoughts. Funny how somebody that does things for a living is so much better at it. Guess that is why I did not try to take my own appendix out when it needed it or why I don't work on my own cars. Congrats again.
