I have budgeted $8K for a new watch. With that being said, I have located a Breitling Chronomat- Gold Bezel-Black Face- 41mm (Model #CB042012 BB86 375A) at Costco for $7,999.99. Apparently this is a discontinued model. Is this a fair price. My other option is a Rolex Submariner (basic model) but I am favoring the Breitling. How does Breitling compare to Rolex on holding value?

Any comments will be well appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

The Sub will hold it's value better. If you're buying a watch to keep it's value, get the Rolex. The key is to buy what you like though and if the Chronomat is calling your name, go for it. I own the Rolex SubC and I love it but I also own a Chronomat 44 Airborne. There are pros and cons to each watch.

The nice thing about the Costco watch is the warranty. I had a Breitling B-1 purchased from Costco back in 2004 that failed 5 years later, returned it with no questions asked. In that respect the Costco watch will beat most any other watch on resale because you can return it for what you paid if you don't like it in the future or if it has a problem.

The general consensus is that the Rolex will hold its value better - however back in 1999 I purchased a brand new Chronomat GT and my brother bought a Rolex Datejust - the price of both was about the same.
Looking at second hand values today for both of these watches show them to be about the same in value.
Personally I found the Breitling to be of better quality, a much more substantial feel. The watches were both steel/gold; with the Breitling being bigger it just seemed like you got more for your money. The bracelet on the Rolex has inner links in gold, but is hollow whereas the inner links of the Breitling is steel with thick gold plating and just feels so much nicer.
However it is of course down to personal choice. At the end of the day if you are buying a watch as an investment then you are buying the wrong thing - it would be better to stick money on shares. Watches like these are wonderful luxury things and you should buy the one that you like the most.
