The A17040 Superocean that I bought last week will require a crystal, and I am wondering if a sapphire crystal can be used to replace my original if it happens to be mineral.

Would the case have been altered during the watch's evolution to require different crystals in the switch from mineral to sapphire?

Breitling started replacing mineral with sapphire several years ago when a crystal replacement was needed. If they don't determine it needs replacing you can still request it.

They used to use mineral? Wow... that's a bit of a cheap option.

Well they used to use plexi, but time moves on.
