I have a CS Blacksteel and have had no issues so far. A couple of light knocks but no scratches or chipped paint. I think it's a great looking watch, especially on the mesh. I'm also quite partial to the CS Military, the black looks gorgeous. There's a few pieces I would need to purchase before it but it's def on my "to do" list.

I guess it comes down to personal preference. Its nice to have a black/titanium etc watch in your collection to mix it up a bit.
Good luck with your purchase!

I just picked this guy up. ImageImageImage

I've had many DLC watches, and I'm a big fan of the blacked out look. Breitling blacksteel is high quality and looks great.

@56scooter - yes the Dark Side of the Moon is solid black ceramic. I think P51 was just refer to how he feels that black works better on certain watches, not that the DSotM was a coating.

Correct Driver.

My bad, when I saw the use of the word applied I was thinking as in "paint", not as in "reference to". That being said my first experience with a black steel watch was not good, but it didn't prevent me from going out and getting another!

Thank you all for your insights. I'm still debating which direction to go for my first Breitling, but your responses help.

As hard as the coating is, I can't go for it. I know that I'll see that first blemish and I'll be aggravated. Now a watch like the DSOTM, full ceramic... That I would do in a heartbeat!

Imaging a ceramic Super Avenger II, or a limited Chronomat with pilot bracelet in full ceramic?! That would be unbelievably sick!

Okay Gents, a follow-up question: is the black titanium (Cockpit B50, Aerospace Evo) as "fragile" as the black steel? I'm leaning towards an Evo in black titanium. The plan is for this to be a daily wear watch for everything except wrenching on motorcycles, yard work, and other obvious threats. Thoughts?

Thanks again,

Tim

The coating is the same, the grade of titanium used by Breitling is softer than the grade of steel used by them.

to me, there are two things that should never be black-wheels on a vehicle and a watch....to me you just can't see the contours and detail of the watch case/wheel when they are black, unless examined closely.

I came across this thread trying to find out about the durability of the black titanium Aeropspace EVO DLC.

Almost pull the trigger on one when I came across this ebay listing showing a pretty worn out Aerospace EVO w/yellow dial.

Even though I don't plan on using mine as a daily beater, the thought it will eventually look like this or worse totally gave me second thought about getting one especially knowing that Breitling does not offer any case refinishing for these black titanium models.

I have a Damasko DC66 Si Black - 5 years old - still looks brand new. If you like black watches, you should at least take a look at what Damasko offer. The watch also runs well within COSC, and it has never been serviced.

BTW - Damasko is known for their high quality steel.

Edit: Not a singel tiny scratch, on the watch, nothing. And I used it as a beater for a while. Their steel is something else. In comparison I serviced both my Breitlings after beating them up, on my Breitling Colt Chronograph II, I even had to change the case once (pushers was destroyed).

Funny that you mentioned Damasko, I have been looking at them on and off for a while now.

I like the idea of having a stainless watch with Rockwell rating score matching my Japanese chef's knives :)

I know some people say that wear marks give character to a watch. I wish I could say that I feel the same and life would be so much less stressful.

Thanks for the suggestion!
