I just read a GQ article stating the 37mm is coming back into fashion, and was just curious as to the board's opinion. I imagine the author of the article (found here: http://men.style.com/theupgrader/style/ ... -hold-sell click on the article and go to page 7) would classify the SA as one of the "ashtray-sized watches" that aren't for everyone.

But this article also made me wonder: do you think the full-ling has hit it's peak in popularity? It seems watches have been getting bigger and bigger, and I imagine the pendulum will have to start swinging back some time. Any thoughts?

Sure, a Patek Calatrava will always be stylish. And sure, 46mm+ watches aren't for everyone - on some wrists they are too big. But I don't think my ashtrays will go out of style in a near future. Rather, I believe it's more about the personality of the wearer than the watch if you're pulling it off or not.

Furthermore, I'm not sure the writer is truly trustworthy. I'll never buy a pair of high glossy red shoes, no matter how trendy they are...

I completely agree with Aleister on this one.

I've always maintained that watches are a very personal thing, and people should buy what they like and what suits them. There was a time when I personally wasn't comfortable with the SA sized watches - however as time went on I became more comfortable with them and now smaller watches often feel and look too small for me. I just happen to have big enough wrists to be happy with a watch up to 48mm or so.

I've never been someone who will mindlessly follow a fashion trend just because it is currently seen as fashionable. I personally like the presence of the larger watches (44mm to 48mm range), but I can also feel happy with a 41mm Seamaster. If someone brought out a 55mm watch, I would not be buying it no matter how many people said it was cool, because my wrists aren't that big!

So if the fashionistas say that big is "out" and small is "in", then great. Good luck to them. All the fashion lemmings can have their fill of whatever they are told is cool. Myself on the other hand will do what I've always done and carry on buying watches I like, for me and me alone.

its not just the size, I had a glycine KMU48...same size as my SA but on the wrist it looked like a station clock!, its about how the watch sits, its proportions etc....wearing the emergency or sea-dweller however feels wierd after the SA, bit like a mid-size

then again, I have gorilla wrists!!

I have to also agree with aleister.

and LOL brian on the women part. ha

For me mens watches gotta at least be 40mm MIN and up. Rolex is jumping on the ship also and releasing bigger mm watches by the end of the year is what I have been hearing also. Also it all depends on the size of your wrist and I guess how "big and tall" you are as well. A 6 ft.+ guy 200+ guy will look funny wearing a 37mm size watch....just my take....

The bigger the better :)

That kind of saddens me that Rolex is hopping on board and increasing their size. I always liked Rolex because they were timeless, understated, and yet were still tough enough to take heavy wearing.

I love Breitling on the other hand because they just seem to be the toughest watches on the planet. Solid, heavy, highly water resistant, to me they are almost bulletproof, yet elegant enough for dress attire.

The markets have changed: Twenty years ago, there was one trend. Everyone followed it. Today there are thousand trends, and everyone is following a couple of them. So there is the trend for large watches and at the same time, there is also a trend for smaler ones...
Every brand is trying to say, what the trend is, but only the big players can really live it (like Breitling). Some brands cause trends, because others copy them (like Rolex with the green bezel). Some trends are caused by new markets: Chinese have smaller wrists, and will not wear large watches for example. Russians buy large redgold watches, so many luxury brands put them on the markets....

I agree with Thomas on this one.. for every trend, there is a counter trend.. for every "Skinny Jean" there is another "Flare", for every three button jacket, there is a one button jacket. It used to be "Pointy shoes are in" .. now its "Pointy, round, and square are all in as well as Patent, regular leather, python, lizard and crocodile."

Big watches are popular now but the small watches seems to be selling just as well for the other brands. Breitling has been associated with large watches so most of the guys here are slightly biased towards it. I am getting a small Franck Muller this week, which is going to be my stab at something gentsy.

I welcome the option of being able to wear a watch that compliments my stature because A 37mm on me is like a 48mm SA on my 5'7" wife.

I used to think that because my wrists scraped on the ground when I walked was due to the fact that I was a gorilla - now I realise that it's because I wear a Panerai....phew - had me worried there

I totally agree. 40mm minimum. Anything smaller would look like a kid's watch.
