I am wondering if anyone has any advice or experience trading in Breitlings...I've caught the SA bug since I bought by SO Steelfish Plus in Nov. I'd prefer to trade my SO in for the SA because I don't think the SO will get wrist time as the watches are similar...

Does anyone have a guess at what I can expect to get at an AD for my Steelfish?

Thanks in advance...
Nick

Unless you have a good relationship with your AD I would have thought you would get more for it selling it yourself on eBay.

I traded in my two tone chronomat last year and got $1700 US$ if that helps any. I probably got ripped off a bit though.

I don't know the specifc dollar amount but I think you'd be better off determining the second-hand value of your watch (using the sales forum here, at TZ, or at some online auction sites), and then see if your AD can give you that in a trade. If they can't, then just sell it yourself. Your AD has to re-sell the piece, so they are less likely to be in a position to give you full value. It's like buying a car. By selling it privately you can negotiatie the sale price of the new watch without the distraction of a trade-in.

All that having been said, I've heard of some AD's who are very generous with trade-in value wen they want to move a higher-valued piece out of their case. Just go in to your AD informed and prepared to walk away from the trade if it's not full-value.

I would guess an AD would only give you about half of what they can sell it for. You're probably better off selling it on here or TZ. The only way you might be able to get a decent trade is if you do upgrade like you're planning on with the SA, but even then I don't think you'd be happy with the amount.

thanks everyone...I think I'm going to try and sell it online and go from there. I don't think I'll get enough from an AD to make a trade in worth while...

Although I can't give you any generalities as to trade-in value, I can give you my two examples at my AD since I owned my first Breitling:
I purchased my first, a Colt Quartz in about 1990, for the price of around $550.00. That was here in Canada, and I don't remember the value of the US dollar at that time. In 1997, the original rubber strap broke (which is not surprising, what is surprising it that it actually lasted 7 years!). I wanted to replace it with a stainless, but at that time there was not one that would fit. I saw a SuperOcean, priced at about $1900.00, which I could not afford. My AD said he would give me $800. for the Colt, which he did, and I was a very happy fellow. That was quite a bit more than what I paid for it!
Over 10 years later, 2008, my AD told me that they would take the SuperOcean in trade and give me 25% off a new Breitling. I was looking at a Steelfish, and also at getting a Blackbird later. I got just over 20% discount on the STeelfish anyway, so my AD advised me to keep the SuperOcean and trade it for the more exensive Blackbird later. That watch is $6050 with pilot bracelet, so the discount would be over $1500.
As it turned out, my AD happened to have an Avenger Skyland Blacksteel a couple of weeks later, which I loved. and although it's a Limited Edition they took my SuperOcean and gave me 25% off the Blacksteel, which I thought was pretty good.
I was also told last year, when I was considering a Cockpit that they could do a bit better than 25% on that one. I guess it also depends a lot upon the model.
I hope this helps a bit. This is only one scenario. Some Breitling ADs do not even take trades, but you can probably get a discount anyway at most of them. Your's however, is a lot newer than my SuperOcean was, so maybe you could do a bit better.
Have fun, and keep us posted!
Cheers,
Carl

I dont get it, they took your cockpit in exchange for a discount? 25% is reasonable enough to get without having to trade anything in.

I actually don't have a Cockpit. What I meant was:
The AD told me that if I traded my SuperOcean in for the Cockpit, he could give me more trade-in value than 25%. He would likely have given me 20% without the trade-in. Hope this makes it clearer.
Cheers,
Carl

You would be better off selling the piece on your own. Keep in mind the trade in will have to be resold, and the dealer/jeweler will buy it at a figure they could sell to make a decent profit.
